We take in good quality second hand clothes, bric a brac and larger items which we sell on at our market stall or themed coffee mornings. We also sell larger items via the internet. Anything we can’t use we donate on to the Red Cross so any donations end up helping a charity, so before you throw anything away please think about donating it to us to help with fundraising. We are always looking for people to help us in any way they can. Just an hour of your time baking a cake, helping on a market stall or taking some photographs can make a huge difference. FOSTERING REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
If you are not able to adopt but could manage to take care of a dog on a temporary basis, please think about this and get in touch with us. Normal home checks will apply! We would also love to find more local foster homes in and around the Rute area . This can make such a difference to a rescue dog! It doesn't have to be long term, a couple of weeks to help them adjust to home life is just as beneficial, while they wait to go to their new families, or after an operation, while they heal and need extra care. GPAR pay for all medical costs.

At any given time, there are a number of dogs living in the refuge in Rute. The majority of them are ex-hunting dogs who have been abandoned or lost, with a sprinkling of surrendered pets who can no longer live with their families.
Many of them, due to their backgrounds, have very little experience of lead walking or how to behave in a town environment. Simple things like cars or mopeds can startle or frighten them. Added to this, many of them have had very little positive human contact or handling until they get to the refuge.
The rehoming team does a great job finding new families for the dogs in the refuge, but the dogs' limited socialisation was identified as a reason that sometimes adoptions fail. From this fact, the dog walking team was formed with the specific aim of socialising the dogs to normal pet experiences in January 2017.
We have gathered a group of volunteers who give a couple of hours twice a week to come to the refuge, handle, lead walk and sometimes groom the dogs. We like to hope that this is helping to prepare the dogs for their new lives as pets in Spain and also further afield.
We have a variety of dogs of different sizes, temperaments and exercise requirements to suit individual preferences. Our focus is on positive interactions between humans and dogs and practising lead skills, so the walking doesn't exclude any level of fitness.
We always welcome new volunteers! We are a friendly bunch and look forward to meeting any new person who would like to make it a routine or a one off visit to the refuge.
We meet on Mondays and Thursdays - times vary depending on the time of year and weather, although we would be happy to expand to more days if we had more volunteers! If you would like to join in, get in touch with Jo Gloyn or Gaynor Shepherd and come along to a session to suit you!
