Eddie turned up at the house of one of our helpers, Jan, early on the morning of Friday 19th March, ravenous, bedraggled and weak. He looked like a German Shepherd puppy and we guessed by his size that he was about six months old. He had a badly matted coat, and had clearly been surviving on his own for some time. Jan, a cat lover, says she is not a natural dog person and yet she was taken with this gentle and friendly creature from the start. He let her stroke him and after gulping down some food and water, he remained close by her for the rest of the day.
Jan contacted GPAR and took him to the vets in Rute on Friday so that they could check him out. Thankfully, he tested negative for Leishmans and the results of other blood tests were normal. His coat was so dirty and matted and full of ticks and fleas that all his hair had to be shaved. This was no mean feat as his poor body is so emaciated, with his ribs clearly visible and his muscles wasted away. After checking him out it became shockingly clear from his teeth that he is in fact an adult dog and his small stature is due to long term neglect and malnutrition. Heartbreaking!
Reverend Doreen very kindly took him in and he stayed there while he recuperated and gained strength. He has been to Mercedes, at Pero Chul, for a bath. He has also been to and fro to the vets for further treatments. It is telling that Volunteers who run the GPAR refuge in Rute were shocked at the state of poor Eddie. In fact they can only recall having had one other dog in such a bad condition.
Eddie is a truly lovely animal, who despite his awful experiences at the hands of the cruel people who owned him, remains friendly, gentle and curious. We all have no doubts that he has a lot of love to give. The one kindness his owners did him was setting him loose so that he now has the opportunity to spend the rest of his life in a loving home.
Since we found Eddie two months ago he has blossomed into a beautiful dog, as you can see from his "now" photos and Doreen says he is ready to go to his forever home. We don't know what the long term impact of his brutal treatment has been, but we know he will make a wonderful companion for someone with love to give. Can you help Eddie?

Hi There, We are now the owner of Eddie. We have had him for about 6 months. He is happy and have a good and friendly spirit. As you prpably know eh came to UK but the new owner couldn't cope with him. He then went to a kennel after a day or 2. We got him on January the 28th. Eddie has spent a lot of time in my grown up son;s room. They are just best pals. Eddie has put on weight and is now about 38kg. We do have anothe GSD, Shelley who is 11.5 year old. Thanks for rescuing Eddie. Eddie does like to chase the foxes in the garden. He does not run away. He is still shy and not too confident - but he is very curious. He is very playfull and happy. Much love
